An enormous contest was playing out in the 1960s in post-World War II Germany to determine if the capitalism and freedom of the west or the communism and totalitarianism of East Germany would win out as the favored form of government. Frank Lyons lived and worked in West Germany during part of this epic time. In a readable, insightful, and amusing manner, Lyons weaves together his observations about ongoing historical events, the developing Cold War, his professional work, and raising his young family. He does not avoid covering the infamous behavior of the Nazis, the Red Army, and others during and after the war. Heidelberg Days 1964-1968 also reflects back on how it all turned out a half century later. Lyons' unique and personal writing style about the history of postwar Germany and the ordinary lives of people living there will make first-time visitors to Germany feel like they are revisiting their home towns.

“The Die is Cast is an examination of the human condition with goodness and evil in competition for the soul. Frank Lyons’ portrayal of a high flying corporate executive and his struggles with his past and himself make for a good read. . . .It is a journey home to place, family, and goodness that fulfills the prophecy of a seanachie [soothsayer] An Irish tale, told by an Irishman, that is a lesson for all who encounter The Die is Cast.”

--James T. Barry, Ed.D., President, Mount  Marty College.

Frank Lyons understands large multinational corporations from working as an executive of a Fortune 100 corporation and president of an international consulting company. He lives on the banks of the Mississippi where he continues to write.

 SOUTH DAKOTA DAYS

By Frank Lyons

South Dakota Daysis a series of stories about rural Midwest life in the 1930s and 1940s. It is written in the down-to-earth language of the times. Even though life was tough during the never-ending Great Depression, people of South Dakota learned how to live their lives with humor, happiness, and eternal hope for better days ahead.

For readers who lived on Midwest farms and ranches in the mid-twentieth century, the stories will stir up memories. For others, it will allow them to "time machine" themselves back to that place and time.

"Here is a book to remind and illuminate: for country people to remember how their parents lived and how they lived as children and for many urbanites to learn how their grandparents lived and their parents lived as children. As the author early observes, "Although country roads were less traveled, they conveyed some of the most genuine people in the world, with their dreams, burdens of sorrow, hopes for prosperity and acceptance." D. Langdale, review
